I love going to the symphony but I hate it when people cough. I often wonder if they are more prone to do so given the unspoken law to stifle any extraneous noise as much as possible. Typically people wait until a movement's end to let forth their barrage of coughing, but if you have ever had the urge to cough and decided to stifle it for any great length of time, then you'll know of the eye watering and agonizing throat tension you experience waiting for a good moment to unleash.

I then thought, wouldn't it be great if there was a piece of music programmed that not only allowed people to cough through-out, it actually encouraged it? I wrote Cough in 2014 for a small ensemble and tapes (does anyone actually use tape anymore?) for that sole purpose. There is a pre-recorded cough track over which the 12-tone and seemingly sporadic themes unfold. Tense and unrelenting, Cough is the perfect piece of music to make as much noise to as needed.
