about

Sappho Fragments is an acousmatic piece written for dispersion among twelve separate speakers (Tracks 1&2 and 3&4 as two distinct stereo pairs and tracks 5-12 as individual mono tracks).
The idea is based on a book I read called "If Not, Winter" which contains the fragments of Sappho's poetry that have been recovered.
I used my mac to read selected fragments (using the Vicky voice) and built a series of tracks using the voice modified by any number of programs and plug-ins.
The piece was originally written in 2005 and revised in 2018. Along the way I became aware of at least fifteen similarly-named pieces and while I toyed with the idea of changing the name, I opted to keep the original and have it take its place among them. It is of course an appropriate name and has become something of a traditional title for scoring using Sappho's poetry.
